Players can choose to sterilize or destroy which, of course, will alter the Illusive Man's disposition toward Shepard. He wants Shepard to sterilize the base instead, so its technology can be used against the Reapers. Shepard and the squad destroy the human-reaper hybrid, and are set to destroy the base itself when Mass Effect 2's Illusive Man contacts them.

Even EDI has no idea what the real purpose of the creature is, but the squad knows it can't be left alive. Once Shepard has activated the Reaper IFF, the clock starts ticking for the captured crew members of the Normandy. The first thing that can affect the last mission in Mass Effect 2 is whether players have done the ME2 character loyalty missions, and how many of the Normandy upgrades have been purchased.

The Suicide Mission does play out roughly the same way no matter what, however. Because of that, keep in mind that Mass Effect 2's ending may not feature every party member based on the choices made throughout the game.

The entire point of Mass Effect 2 is based around collecting crewmates to help Shepard storm the Collector's base.
